Notes for Richard Shields
Richard Shields is the only one I've researched so far that was on the 1870 Bland County Census, under the household of Gordon H. Kegley who was a white male farmer. Richard Shields is listed as a laborer, age 33, black, born in Maryland, cannot read, cannot write, able to vote. Listed with William Miller age 22, black farm laborer.61 1886- The heirs of Thomas F. Walker through their attorney T.E. Gregory sues A. J. Tynes and Richard Shields in Chancery Court for amounts due on lands purchased from Thomas F. Walker in his lifetime. Richard Shields was deemed to owe $150 aggragate amount of the principal of the five purchase money bonds sued on with interest thereon from 11 Day of August 1879 till paid. This amount was subject o a credit of $20 as of 23 Sept 1879; $21 26 Oct 1880, $52.50, 4 May 1882, $29.00 28 March 1884, $45. 15 day of March 1883. By this account he had already paid $167.50 and owed more on the interest. A.J. Tynes and Richard Shields eventually paid off the interest and it was ordered a deed 62be conveyed to them for their lands and the case was stricken from the docket. 63 4 July 1877- Russell Carter, Alfred Carter, and Richard Shields put their mark on a deed to James W. Hamilton, who was made trustte for $100 secured from James M. French and Thomas J. Munsey. The house and lot of Russell Carter plus his crops of wheat and corn, one wagon, 2 horses (one bay and one gray) were put up for the debt to Munsey and French. Alfred Carter had one horse (a brown mare) now in possession of Richard Shields. The debt was to be paid off in 60 days. If property did not cover debt Alfred Carters, and Richard Shields property could be attached. Alfred Carter, Russell Carter and Richard Shields according to census could not read nor write and signed the deed with an X. 64 By the 9 of October 1895 Richard Shields property had been taken for this debt. Even though Richard was only in possession of a horse he was listed as a co-signer to the debt of 1877. Not sure if he understood what he signed. The $100 was to be paid back in 60 days. It went not to Chancery but to a "corporation court of the city of Radford". It states: This deed between Richard Shields and Sam'l W. Williams and Chas. P. Munsey for consideration of one dollar in hand paid and the further consideration that the said Sam'l W. Williams sheall cause to be satisfied and extinguished a decree of the Corporation Court of the City of Radford rendered by said court in favor of said Williams against Richard Shields in the chancery cause therein pending of French and Munsey forte vs Alfred Carter et als. and other causes heard therewith including principal interest and costs there of and in further consideration that the said C.P. Munsey shall cause to be marked satisfied and extinguished so much of said decree as is for his benefit and shall also mark satisfied a certain deed of trust executed by said Richard Shields to Thos. J. Muncy Trustee to secure said C. P. Munsey his said debt which deed of trust is recorded in the Clerks Office of Bland County court fo rthe considerations aforesaid the said Richard Shield's party of the first part aforesaid doth hereby grant, bargain, sell and convey unto said parties of the second part all that certain tract or parcel of land lying on Dry Fork Creek in the County of Bland containing 247 3/4 acres...being the same land conveyed to the said Richard Shields by Martin William Commissioner by deed dated 27 Sept 1886. Signed by Richard Shields his X mark.65 See entry for Samuel W. Williams. By 24 Sept 1902 Samuel L. William and C.P. Munsey and wives conveyed by contract a deed daited 26 Oct 1897 to William Gray, Samuel Gray and Charles Robinson the 247 acres of Richard Shield land for $565. Part of the purchase price had been paid in timber with Samuel Williams retaining timber rights on the remaining 150 acres for 8 years from 1902 as part of the payment. 66NOTE William Gray was married 1st to Amanda Shields, Richard Shields daughter.
